Abscesses that get into the sole will sometimes build up and fan out between the sensitive and insensitive sole, forming what is called a subsolar abscess. This can sometimes cause large portions of the outer layer of the sole to peel away. When this happens, the foot will be very tender, similar to what a person might feel if the outer skin of a large blister peels off. There will also be only the thinnest layer of material between the coffin bone and the rough, dirty world, so to avoid further injury and infection, it is critically important for the hoof be kept clean and protected while the new sole is growing in (fig. 10.29).

10.29 A broom’s bristle that got under the hoof wall of this foot led to a large subsolar abscess, which caused most of the insensitive (outer) sole to peel away in the circled area. What you see here is the new sole beginning to grow in. While the horse was very tender and had to be managed carefully, the prognosis for his recovery was good.
